Roman Portraiture Images Of Power
Augustus, the first Roman emperor, recognized that his portrait image might be a powerful propaganda tool. Court sculptors created a model portrait type, which was then replicated. The copies were circulated around the Roman world in order for further copies to be manufactured and placed in public places. Everyone in the empire knew what the emperor looked like and was reminded of his power and authority because of these sculptures and busts, as well as coins featuring the emperor’s image.
