Is a “Really Good Spanking” Really Good?
Charlotte and Jeff stopped at a neighborhood fast-food restaurant for a quick hamburger on Saturday afternoon. The place was buzzing with activity, and children of all ages were everywhere.
Charlotte and Jeff had no children of their own, but they watched in amazement as many different types of adults talked to, played with, and reprimanded children.
Jeff was especially curious about one harried woman who seemed to be in charge of a half-dozen youngsters. One of the children, a 6-year-old, shook salt into her hand, licked it, then laughed as she brushed her salty hands over the children near her. They shrieked with laughter as they dodged the salt, throwing napkins to defend themselves. The woman looked sternly at them and threatened to make them sit in the car if they did not settle down.
Jeff leaned over and whispered to Charlotte, “What those children need is a really good spanking!”

Practical Application Case Discussion
I’ll Leave You Here Forever”
Marlene pauses in the shopping mall waiting for her 2-year-old to catch up with her. Her 4-month-old, who is asleep on her shoulder, is beginning to feel very heavy. “Crystal,” she calls to her 2-year-old, “Please come on. We need to get home.”
Crystal stalls as she climbs on and off benches and stops to look at other shoppers. Her mother loses patience, “Crystal! You come here now or you’re going to be sorry.” Crystal ignores her.
Marlene walks quickly back to Crystal and, taking her firmly by the wrist says, “Let’s go.” Crystal responds with the rubbery-legs strategy toddlers use when they rebel. Her legs go limp as she slumps to the floor; her mother clutches her wrist as her body dangles from it and she whines, “Don’t want go home.”
Marlene realizes that she cannot safely carry her baby and Crystal both out of the shopping mall. In exasperation, she snaps, “That’s it, I’m leaving. If you won’t come, then I’ll just leave you here forever. Good-bye!”
She turns and begins to walk briskly out of the mall. She hears Crystal howling and running to catch up with her.
