Instructions:
PREA: Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003
For PREA week I want you to pick 2 out of the 4 prompts and write a 2-4 page APA (Double spaced, sources cited, proper grammar, etc.) response to each prompt. This means that your total response should be no less than 4 pages and no more than 8 pages long (not including citations). No title page is necessary due to the nature of discussion boards. In the event that you write more than two prompts, the first two will be graded.
This assignment is worth 9pts.
10% – APA format
70% – Content
10% – Length
10% – Grammar and professionalism
At LEAST one source must be academic for each prompt, Google Scholar and UCF’s library are great places to find scholarly articles. There are no maximum number of references, but you need at least one source each.
Prompt 1: You are the warden of a small maximum security but low budget prison in any state that you wish. Describe the ways that you would reduce violence, particularly PREA related violence (Sexual violence and extortion) within prison walls. Tell me how you would achieve this goal with some level of specificity. What programs, infrastructure or other methods would you use to achieve PREA compliance and keep rates of PREA-recorded victimization to a minimum?
Prompt 2: You are a warden of a large, short staffed prison in any state that you wish. One day you receive a grievance from an offender informing you that a correctional officer made an inappropriate comment towards an offender. You review the video tape and find that the correctional officer referred to the offender as a “punk bitch” and told the offender “Kiss my ass” after the offender raised his middle finger to officer. This is not the first grievance you have seen in regards to that officer making comments of that nature towards that offender and other offenders. How would you respond to this grievance? Officially, what is the best course of action to remain PREA compliant? Please remember that you are short staffed and justify whatever decision you make.
Prompt 3: You are an attorney for an inmate in any state that you wish and you are NOT a mandated reporter, nor do you have any legal obligation to report anything the offender says. Your client, a convicted child molester, tells you that they are at high risk of being sexually assaulted and that they have received threats from other offenders. What would you tell them that their options are? What actions would you recommend the offender take? What would be some of the consequences of these actions either official actions or from the “inmate code?”
Prompt 4: You are a correctional officer in a medium security facility in any state that you wish. An offender, who is a well known liar and a convicted sex offender tells you that they were just raped. They have no visible injuries and a smirk. You strongly suspect that this offender is gaming the system as they have been talking about wanting to be single-celled for a long time. What do you do? How did you come to this decision? Is your choice PREA compliant?
