Your client is John, a 36-year-old car mechanic. John was diagnosed four months ago with a “Mood Disorder-Mania with Psychotic Features.” His delusions are the grandiose type and John believes he has discovered a cure for cancer. John’s current presentation is consistent with mania. The psychiatrist prescribed Prozac (Fluoxetine), 40 mg per day, and Seroquel XR, 100 mg qhs. After 2 months, John was experiencing moderate relief from his symptoms but is becoming bothered by racing thoughts and an inner restlessness/to be in constant motion (r/o Extrapyramidal Symptoms
(EPS), Akathisia). John wonders if he should consult again with his psychiatrist and if there is anything that can be done. He hesitates to go back to the doctor because he is not sure if his problems can be resolved.
Clinical Social Workers posses a range of roles such as consultant, counselor, monitor, advocate educator, and researcher with clients who take psychotropic medication. As a means of preparing for such interventions, the social worker should reflect on and be able to articulate responses to the
