Using multiple research approaches have been shown to strengthen results. This claim is corroborated by USAID (2013), stating in its briefing note that “Over the past three decades, evaluators and others in the development field have increasingly recognized that incorporating multiple methods into a single evaluation often results in a stronger, more complete evaluation than conventional evaluation approaches relying on only one method.
In the same vein, researchers interested in study ‘how much, how many people behaving in a certain way can conveniently use quantitative approaches, however, if a researcher is interested in broadening or deepening knowledge and understanding, exploring experiences, views of people in the social world, they might be well served by employing qualitative approach to inquiry (Hancock, Ockleford, & Windridge, 2009).
An alternative research approach I believe would help deepen the understanding and explore the effects the type of place had on the children in the GAL programme, is individual interviews.
Individual interviews give the researcher power to control the flow of the conversation and to dig deeper into issues raised by the participant. Ryan, Coughlan & Cronin (2009) states that one to one interview are usually conducted face to face, giving the researcher an opportunity to collect in-depth information by probing hidden meanings and understanding.
The researcher can also understand “body language, facial expression, and eye contact.” In my professional experience, interviews when well conducted can elicit robust response from the participant, therefore give the researcher an opportunity to build on key points raised maybe during a focus group discussion for instance.
