Instructions:
Is bottled water safer or healthier than regular tap water? In this week’s homework, you’ll compare and contrast the benefits and drawbacks of tap and bottled water. We’ll concentrate on the negative effects of bottled water on the environment.
The stages to completing your task are as follows:
Step 1: Go to http://storyofstuff.org/movies/story-of-bottled-water/ and watch “The Story of Bottled Water.” (This is a link to another website.)
Step 2: Examine the following resources:
What You Should Know About Tap Water http://water.epa.gov/drink/guide
https://www.storyofstuff.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/SOBottledWater FAQ.pdf (This is a link to another website.)
Step 3: Find out where your drinking water comes from and how clean it is before you drink it (water quality report). The following is some guidance on how to read a water quality report: https://extension.psu.edu/water-analysis-report-interpretation (Links to an external site.)
For certain municipalities, the source of water and its quality are both listed in the same report. Here are reports for towns in the area. If your town isn’t listed, try searching for “your town name + water quality report” on Google. If you live outside of the nation or simply cannot locate your city, utilize Bellevue:

Step 4: Fill in the blanks and upload your responses to the following questions:
1 What makes individuals want to drink bottled water? Why do you drink it if you don’t have to? Why not, if you don’t?
2. Look at the water quality report for your municipality. Where does the tap water (drinking water) in your home originate from? Instead, if you rely on a privately owned groundwater well, tell us about it. Tell us where the water comes from if it’s a municipal water system, and read your town’s Annual Drinking Water Report*.
3. Is your tap water safe to drink? Examine the table that should be included in your town’s drinking water report. Does it fulfill all of the EPA’s pollutant guidelines?
4. Do you have concerns about the quality of your drinking water? Why do you think that is?
5. Watch The Bottled Water Story and read the FAQs. What federal agency is responsible for tap water (drinking water) standards, and what are their requirements? What federal agency is responsible for bottled water regulations, and what are their requirements? Which is the more stringent?
6. We hear advertising in the United States about how bottled water is cleaner and more convenient. List at least three of the risks and disadvantages of bottled water using information from the video and FAQ.
7. The average cost of 1000 liters of water in the United States is $2.81. Do you believe this figure accurately reflects the true value of water? Why do you think that is?
8. To determine how many gallons of water you consume per day, use this fast water calculator: https://www.home-water-works.org/calculator (This is a link to another website.)
What was your assessment:
9. On a daily basis, the average American consumes 80-100 gallons of water for personal usage. Were you higher or lower than the national average? Why?
10. What are two ways you can cut down on your own water usage?
