Midterm Exam
Write a 2-3 page typed, double-spaced essay in response to the following question. Be sure to
write in standard essay form (with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion) and to
support your claims with specific arguments from Charles Taylor’s essay “The Politics of
Recognition” and Todorov’s book The Conquest of America. In writing your essay, feel free to
use the assigned readings, the class PowerPoints, and any notes you took in class, but you
should not consult the internet. I want to see your own work, written in your own
words. Responses based on internet sources will not receive credit.
Essay Question
In Part IV of his essay “The Politics of Recognition,” Charles Taylor examines the debate over
whether the Canadian province of Quebec ought to be recognized as a “distinct society,” which
would afford the province special constitutional protection of its French cultural identity.
Based on your reading of Taylor, construct an argument for recognizing Quebec as a distinct
society and an argument against recognizing Quebec as a distinct society. Would such protection
of Quebec’s cultural identity recognize the Other in the way Todorov calls for? Base your
response to this final part of the question on your reading of The Conquest of America.
