Relationship in Class & Political Identities & Behaviors
Write a memo about this prompt:
“What is the relationship between class (on the one hand) and political identities or behavior (on the other)? Do you think that class trumps other social categories? Why or why not?”
based on those readings :
Weber, Max. 1973. “Class, Status, Party.” Chapter 7, Sections 2–8 in From Max Weber: Essays in Sociology. Edited and translated by H. H. Gerth and C. Wright Mills. Oxford University Press,
Madison, James. 1987. “The Utility of the Union as a Safeguard Against Domestic Faction and Insurrection (continued).” Essay 10 in The Federalist Papers. Edited by Isaac Kramnick. Penguin Classics.
Dahl, Robert. 1977. “Subcultures, Cleavage Patterns, and Governmental Effectiveness.” Chapter 7 in Polyarchy: Participation and Opposition. Yale University Press
Marx, Karl, and Friedrich Engels. 1978. “Manifesto of the Communist Party.” In The Marx-Engels Reader. 2nd ed. Edited by Robert C. Tucker. W.W. Norton & Company. Note: Skip the preamble.
The goal of the memos is to practice the skill of identifying the key issues and debates within a specific literature, describing the positions of scholars within those literatures, and commenting critically on those positions and the state of the debate. A high-quality memo should not simply summarize the readings, but rather offer a critical discussion of the underlying issues they address.
The memo should engage with as many of the readings as you feel are appropriate to sufficiently develop your argument(s). It is not necessary to cite every single reading. However, as many of the readings are in conversation with each other, it is generally a good idea to make sure you are engaging with pieces that present alternative perspectives on the topic.
Memos should be double-spaced in 12-point font and should be around 1000 words.
