Description
What is Ian Hacking’s reservation about the usefulness of the concept ‘social construction?’
First, explain how Hacking approaches this concept. Next, explain what Hacking’s reservation about this concept is, and try to reconstruct an argument by laying out what you understand the steps in his reasoning to be. Then, briefly introduce his notion of an interactive kind and give an example of an interactive kind.
Finally, in about one paragraph, discuss the following: Do you think the nature of an interactive kind means that our knowledge of epistemic kinds is more or less secure than than our knowledge of the natural world (plants, rock formations, etc.)?
For your final paper this semester, you will revise and expand either the final paragraph of this short paper, or a similar final paragraph of the third short paper.
I will be asking the following questions as I read your paper:
Is your prose simple, easy to read, and easy to understand?
Do you clearly state what you’re trying to accomplish in your response (your thesis)? Is it obvious to the reader what your main thesis is?
Do you present other philosophers views accurately and charitably?
Do you offer a supporting argument for the claim you make? Is it obvious to the reader what this argument is?
Is the structure of your paper clear? For instance, is it clear what parts of your paper are discussing Descartes, and what parts are your own critique of Descartes? This paper should be about 2 pages, double spaced, with 1″ margins in 12pt font. Please anonymize your paper by removing your name from the body of the paper itself as well as from the file name.
