Part 1:
Benefits and Consequences of Technology
As Hite and Seitz (2016) discuss in Chapter 8: Technology, technological advancements and changes may affect how we can work to find solutions for the global threats discussed so far. Technological advances can and do affect development in positive and negative ways.
Besides biotechnology, identify one technology that seems to have the greatest potential positive effect on food security. Discuss any potential negative uses of that technology. Do the benefits of these technologies outweigh the potential negative consequences they have on food security? Why or why not?
Part 2: Review the posts of your classmates and respond to at least one other post, offering a substantive comment on that classmate’s position on the issue(s).
Briefly respond to a Peer’s Post:
“Besides biotechnology, identify one technology that seems to have the greatest potential positive effect on food security.
The one technology that seems to have the greatest positive effect on food security is the “Green” Revolution. This new technology brought greatly increased harvests of wheat and impressive increases in rice production in a lot of Asian countries. The new seeds that were developed through this technology are highly responsive to fertilizer which means agricultural production will increase.
Discuss any potential negative uses of that technology.
The negative aspect of this technology per the textbook (page 105) is that “funds for agricultural research in the developing world have plummeted, both within those countries and as a part of the shrinking foreign aid budgets of some developed countries.”
Also, water tables (feed irrigation systems) are falling to unsustainable levels.
Do the benefits of these technologies outweigh the potential negative consequences they have on food security? Why or why not?
The benefits definitely outweigh the negatives because with the rising food insecurities in poor countries, this new technology will increase the production of food and feed families in need. If funds for the research is a problem, then awareness should be spread throughout the nation for people to donate to this important cause.
