Description
Social Class Exploration
Growing up in a class society, weve all learned attitudes about others and ourselves that help perpetuate the class system. These questions will aid you in becoming aware of the oppressions and/or privileges youve experienced because of your background and how they affect your life now. Awareness is the first step in making a commitment to change. For your essay, answer 3 of the 4 questions in sections A-D below (whichever most apply) in separate paragraphs for each section, and answer all 4 questions about your current views about social class (section E) in two more paragraphs. Finally, make 2 or more connections to key concepts in the chapter on poverty and social class.
Money and Work:
Who earned money in your family? Did the income change?
Did you feel you had enough relatively (i.e., more or less than your friends)?
What kind of job did money earners in your family have? How much control did they have at work?
What were the attitudes about spending and saving, loaning and borrowing, or accepting welfare?
Home:
What kind of neighborhood/s did you live in? Did you move a lot? If so, why?
Did you own your home? Who cleaned your home?
Who lived at home (older/married children, grandparents, others)?
How were feelings, especially anger, expressed?
Education:
How much formal education did your parents have?
What were the expectations for your education?
Are you the first generation in your family to attend college?
What do you believe is the most important reason for a college education?
Health:
Did you get regular physical checkups? Or did you get regular dental exams/cleanings or fillings, or braces?
How was smoking or alcohol treated in your family?
Was regular exercise considered important? Or what about participation in sports?
What were the attitudes about food, eating in your family? What types of meals, snacks, drinks, desserts were common?
Now:
How would you describe your class background and current class status and how do you feel about that (angry, ashamed, guilty)?
Do you see yourself as upwardly or downwardly mobile? Do you feel like you have control over this?
If you get in a financial jam, do your parents help you out financially?
What are some examples of oppressions and/or privileges you experience now that relate to your class background?
