Please answer the following prompt(s):
Start by defining hegemony and describing how hegemony conveys cultural values by “celebrating” or “normalizing” certain cultural norms and values. Then find an example of a cultural artifact that conveys a form of cultural hegemony that celebrates or normalizes oppression (Cops tv show, wife-beater shirts, violence against women in the media, music lyrics, all-lives matter, confederate flag, statues, memorials, animal products, pollution, etc.).
Describe this cultural artifact and the hegemonic cultural norms and values this artifact represents. How did your example achieve popular “consent”?
How were the attitudes represented in your example normalized? What role does the “culture industry” play in normalizing the dominant culture?
Next, describe how counterhegemony has pushed back against the dominant culture.
What sorts or images, language, symbols, etc. are used to counter the dominant hegemony represented in your artifact?
Can the same “culture industry” be used to counter the dominant hegemony?
Why or why not?
According to Foucault, what is the purpose of prison in society?
What do prisons and the Panopticon say about our society and what Foucault calls discipline?
How does Foucault’s perspective on prisons compare to that of the structural functionalists’ from Week 1?
Make sure you compare and contrast these two perspectives on prisons and disciplinary society using evidence from class readings, videos, etc. Make sure to cite ALL evidence used.
Which approach or perspective (Foucault’s or structural functionalism’s) do you find more convincing?
Explain your argument
