Strain Theory Of Deviance (Sociology 1301)
There is a section in Chapter 7 that discusses Robert Merton’s Strain Theory of Deviance. This theory states that when people are under pressure and/or under stress to achieve certain cultural goals, they may turn to various forms of deviance to relieve the stress and achieve specific social goals.
You will need to identify an individual or social group that is well-known in the public sphere using Merton’s theory. You’ll be using one of his deviant behavior subcategories (innovator, ritualist, rebel, or retreatist). Using their own behavior and track record as examples, you will need to explain and specify which category this individual best fits into and why. You could pick a professional athlete (LeBron James), an artist(?) (Justin Bieber), or a social group like the Amish, for example. Please be as specific as possible with your examples and how they relate to the category.
Minimum word count is 600-650 words. There is no upper limit.
Please bold or highlight the chosen typology and individual in the title (this is required so that I can identify Merton’s specific typology).
