Answer the questions regarding values and choices using the framework of The Five R’s approach to ethical nursing practice from this week’s reading.
FIVE (R)ELATIONSHIPS
BOXES 26 Ethical Nursing Practice Using the Five Rs
1. Read: Learn about ethical theories, methodologies, and the American Nurses Association’s Code of Ethics for Nurses by reading. Effort and attention are the most effective ways to develop insight and practical wisdom.
2. Reflect: Consider one’s egocentric attachmentsvalues, intentions, motivations, and attitudesin a conscious manner. Moral community members are socially engaged and concerned about the common good. Having good insight into life events, cultivating and employing practical wisdom, and being kind and socially just are all examples of this.
3. Recognize: Whether clear or ambiguous, recognize ethical bifurcation (choice) points. Nurses may overlook both minor and large opportunities to help alleviate human suffering in various forms due to apathy or avoidance.
4. Make a commitment: Make a commitment to cultivate and practice intellectual and moral virtues. Knowing ethical norms, rules, responsibilities, and principles is useless without a nurse’s good character.
5. Respond: Use intellectual and moral virtues to respond to people and situations on a regular basis. Nurses have a say in how their characters evolve and what they do.
What exactly are values?
Q. What do you consider to be your own values?
Q. Why do you hold them in such high regard?
Q. What are your society’s values?
Q. What factors do you consider when making decisions?
Q. Do your decisions reflect your values?
Q. What are some of the most important values in society?
What are the boundaries of freedom of choice?
Q. Who is limiting your options?
Q. Are restrictions to options good?
Q. Do you impose restrictions on other people’s choices?
Q. Should a health-care institution or the government impose restrictions on people’s freedom of choice? If so, in what way and under what conditions?
Feel free to agree, disagree, question, compare, and discuss each other’s responses in a serious and courteous manner in your comments to peers. You might also mention the following: Did any of the responses catch you off guard? If so, how would you go about doing it? Did reading your classmates’ responses to the questions broaden your perspective on how to respond to them?
Finally, examine the following: The belief that if you are inclined to health care as a profession, you are fundamentally steered by an inner compass that is made up of a strong moral foundation is a widespread one in the field. What makes this a risky assumption?
