The history of photography
The history of photography begins in the early 19th century, when the first photographic images were produced by a number of inventors and pioneers, including Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Daguerre, and William Henry Fox Talbot.
In 1826, Niépce created the first permanent photograph, using a process he called heliography. His photograph was taken using a camera obscura and a plate coated with bitumen. This process required an eight-hour exposure time, but it marked the beginning of photography as a medium.
Daguerre later developed the daguerreotype, a photographic process that produced highly detailed and sharp images on a silver-coated copper plate. Daguerreotypes were widely popular in the mid-19th century, and were used to create portraits, landscapes, and other types of images.
Meanwhile, Talbot was working on his own photographic process, which he called the calotype. This process used a paper negative and a salt solution to create a positive print, and was an important step in the development of photography as a mass medium.
Over the next several decades, photography continued to evolve, with new processes and techniques being developed. In the 1880s, the introduction of roll film made photography more portable and accessible, and the development of the first Kodak camera in 1888 made photography even more accessible to the general public.
Throughout the 20th century, photography continued to grow and evolve, with new styles and movements emerging. The invention of color film in the 1930s opened up new possibilities for photographers, and the rise of digital photography in the late 20th century changed the medium once again.
