The Most Critical Pollutants
Part 1 (Explain in great detail):
In Chapter 6: The Environment – Part I, Hite and Seitz (2016) note that pollution and global warming were an important concern of the first world conference on the environment that was held in Sweden in 1972. Principle 6 of that declaration stated that we must stop the release of pollutants and heat that cannot be effectively processed by our environment (Declaration of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. 1972. Chapter 11. p. 2. <https://www.ipcc.ch/apps/njlite/srex/njlite_download.php?id=6471>).Thinking about the different types of pollutants and heat that can be effectively processed by our environment, which are the most critical to address? Identify three pollutants you consider to be the most critical to address and explain why you believe they are most important.Watch this video and comment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1J5RQUYlzc Part 2 (Respond to a peer’s post):

Peer’s Post:
“Good afternoon Professor and classmates,
Principle 6 of Declaration of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, from 1972 in Sweden, states “The discharge of toxic substances or of other substances and the release of heat, in such quantities or concentrations as to exceed the capacity of the environment to render them harmless, must be halted in order to ensure that serious or irreversible damage is not inflicted upon ecosystems. The just struggle of the peoples of ill countries against pollution should be supported (https://www.ipcc.ch/apps/njlite/srex/njlite_download.php?id=6471).” The pollutants most critical to address include smog, ozone depletion, and acid rain. Industrializing has increased dirty air. Smog is particularly heavy in China. China has the world’s largest population and quickly expanded causing a lot of air pollution in their inner cities. The text identifies that the pollution in the air and water led to about $100 billion per year towards healthcare and non-healthcare expenses, for China. The COVID-19 pandemic has added to clearing of smog as well as the addition of electric vehicles and a high dependency on public transportation. The text sites The World Health Organization as estimating air pollution caused 3.7 million premature deaths worldwide and of those, 88% were in lower- and middle-income countries. The Clean Air Act was passed in 1970 which reduced lead by 95%, particulates by 60%, and sulfur dioxide by 30%. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates 200,000 premature deaths and 700,000 chronic bronchitis cases were averted. Despite progress and a strengthening of this act in 1990, there is much to do. Ozone depletion is occurring due to humans. Chlorofluorocarbons, CFCs, are used daily as an aerosol spray for AC and refrigerators. These are destroying our ozone. A hole over the South Pole is growing larger every year. This hole allows for more of the Sun’s harmful UV rays to enter when they cannot escape contributing to global warming. The CFCs stay in the atmosphere for 50 to 100 years. In 1996 CFC production was ended and since then it has become evident that the ozone is recuperating. The CFC peak is now declining. Acid rain comes from the gases released from burning fossil fuels, dioxide and oxides of nitrogen, combining with moisture and oxygen in sunlight which causes the sulfur dioxide to become sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid can be found inside car batteries. The acids then return from the ozone to Earth by precipitation. These acids kill water wildlife, dissolve limestone and gravestones, cause corrosion, and damages plants like trees and farers crops. Unfortunately, the effects to humans are unknown, but I would avoid battery acid at all costs. That we know is harmful and can cause burns. Long term exposure to chemicals has been found in other studies to be bad, so I can only hypothesis the same applies here. Some scientists think this can cause the toxic metals in water pips to be released into drinking water supplies. Yet no studies have been done on human health. There are agreements between US and Canada to reduce pollution/emissions from the coal burning. Europe is also facing the problem, too. In Europe there are 300,000 acres where acid rain poisoned the ground and destroyed the forest from the mass amounts of coal burning power plants. Because, as Barry Commoner put it, “everything must go somewhere,” it is understood that the excretion of the toxins will be consumed and that consumption of toxic will kill the organism. This was also addressed in the Clean Air Act. These three pollutants’ affects are well known and measures have been taken to significantly reduce the impact. This must continue.
The video is heart breaking. How can people still traffic people and their own people at that? Why would they feel basic human rights are okay to violate just to make a small profit? These are kids ranging from 7 up to 15 years old. It seems to be about 2/3 male and 1/3 female. The situation is so dire that undercover cameras are used to expose it. Sadly, the chocolate companies are either ignorant to the fact that child trafficking happens to achieve the intense amounts of cocoa plants needed to be farmed to sustain chocolate manufacturing or they are willfully ignoring it to make profits. There are people in the communities against it, and some people are helping to stop and reunite the children with their families, but they are not taking enough action to stop it. The criminals are also operating by avoiding police interference. The traffickers are getting smarter. The chocolate companies that are partaking in child labor, despite the 2008 regulation banning it, should be fined and that money should go to the parents of the children who were lied to when they were promised to be able to make money for their labor. Sinful.” – Peer
