The Socioeconomic Status and Covid Outcomes Discussion on the Environmental Justice Issue
Each response must be at least 50 words long.
The First Round of Debate
. What did you learn from the video that you didn’t know before?
I discovered that there are 85 miles of petrochemical factories along the Mississippi River’s banks. In Louisiana, your home could be 500 feet from a chemical facility.
2. What is the relationship between Cancer Alley and Environmental Justice?
Because people’s homes and where they reside could be directly next to a plant, Cancer Alley is an environmental issue, and those individuals must endure the repercussions. This is an environmental justice issue since these individuals want
their homes to be safeguarded from the environment they live in.
3. What are some of the reasons why petrochemical plants are built here rather than in nearby areas?
In this sector, the government encourages huge corporations that use oil and emit fossil fuels into the atmosphere. As a result, these places with large enterprises that support the government obstruct the government’s ability to serve the
people. Another reason the plants are in this location is that democracy has been sabotaged.
4. Why are residents of Cancer Alley more susceptible to COVID-19?
These residents are particularly vulnerable to Covid since the CDC’s information is inaccurate, and they are suffering from health problems as a result of chemicals and fossil fuels they are unaware of. One mother, for example, had no idea why
her child was suffering health problems until a woman visited on her home to raise awareness about petrochemical factories. Another reason is that the chemicals play a role in the development of autoimmune illnesses.
5. What do you think Cancer Alley residents could do to help the situation?
This is also a difficult topic to acquire information about, so if the community worked together to gather some facts, they could increase awareness of the situation. They would be able to make a difference if more people were aware of the
health and governance challenges.
6. Give an example of a location in the United States that is dealing with an environmental justice issue similar to Cancer Alley. What other marginalized community/region do you know that is disproportionately affected by pollution, for
example? Describe how this example relates to Cancer Alley.
A video I watched called Seaspiracy gave an example of another place greatly impacted by pollution. In this video, fisherman along the African coast who rely on fishing for a living are forced to sail out deeper into the ocean on small boats to
fish due to the quantity of pollution in the ocean. This is similar to Cancer Alley in that it is not widely known, it is located in a poor neighborhood, and people are dying as a result of pollution.
Two-part discussion
. I had never heard of Cancer Alley before watching this video. I had no clue such a place existed, or how often people in this area have lost money owing to their horrible living conditions as a result of these dangerous corporations.
2. Cancer Alley is an issue of Environmental Justice because it is an example of how individuals with less money and those who belong to minority groups are compelled to live in poorer conditions than others. Many of them don’t have a choice about where they reside, as one person in the film said.
3. Some reasons petrochemical companies are located in this area are because the St. James Parish Council changed their district into a future industrial district to allow for more companies to take over, and the petrochemical companies
often choose to locate near water sources, such as the Mississippi River, which is where Cancer Alley is located next to.
4. Cancer Alley dwellers are more sensitive to COVID because of the relationship between air pollution and severe COVID-19 effects.
5. Residents of Cancer Alley should continue to share their tales and fight the expansion of petrochemical companies. It’s hard to tell what they should do because they are the ones suffering the most, yet they don’t have any input in what’s happening to their health or surroundings.
6. An example of a city with a similar situation to Cancer Alley is in Los Angeles, California. According to the California Health Report, African Americans and Hispanics breathe in 40 percent (and Asian Americans 20 percent ) more hazardous
substances generated by car pollution than white Californians. It has been established that those in minority groups and those with lower household wages have little choice but to live in more densely populated regions which are more
affected by the pollution originating from gas and diesel. This pollution has lead to lung and heart ailments.
