the Tulsa Race Riot Massacre Essay Project
Questions: How was the Tulsa Race Riot or Massacre portrayed in newspapers at the time? (These would be the last 3 articles.) How has it been remembered? (First two articles.) While I realize the first article makes correlations between Tulsa and BLM today, please focus your answers on the documents and Tulsa in 1921.
Peer response:
Thanks, The Tulsa Race Riot or Massacre had two different sides to it. In the NAACP, it condemned the actions of the whites and it showed the effect of what they had done. It got a lot more personal with the NAACP talking about one thousand houses burned down and even a well-respected African American killed by defending his family. It also condemned the white girl and ousted her as a liar. William Howard Taft also condemned the white people for causing such a disaster and said that the city should’ve prepared for this. This last one is a different point of view; Amy Comstock blamed the African American communities for being poor and that because of that it led to the Race Riots/Massacre. Now it has been remembered as one of the worst acts of racial violence here in the US, with many survivors left with PTSD and recalling the horrors that had happened.
