That Thing Around Your Neck is a song about a thing that hangs around your neck.
The first step is to pick an author and write a topic proposal that explains what you’ll talk about.
about, how it relates to the main question (Your Assignment), and what the paper’s basic premise will be.
Don’t just say you like Li-Young Lee or Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie; explain why. Evidence of preliminary research, a working thesis, and a good basic understanding of the author(s) and works you intend to write about in your paper should all be included in your topic proposal. Include a statement about the topic’s importance as well as any special knowledge or interest you have about it.
Requirements:
200-300 words in MLA format
Grammar, punctuation, and mechanics are all generally correct.
In the topic proposal, you may use I, but not in the research paper.
Story and Culture
Research Project for English 1102
2021 Spring
Your thesis statement should respond to the following question:
What impact does the author’s cultural background have on the story you’ve chosen?
You’ll have to decide which aspects of that cultural background are most important, and you’ll probably have to narrow it down even more due to space constraints.
Possibilities:
The presence of a culture can sometimes be seen in the values of the characters, and the influence is subtle.
Cultural forces, whether political, social, or philosophical, can sometimes drive the plot of a story. Here are a few examples; there are a plethora of ways to think about and write about this.
Consider stories in which the protagonists are confronted with political oppression and corruption.
Consider stories in which the plot is based on marriage customs or other traditions. Of course, this could refer to a character who follows the rules or one who defies them.
Consider stories in which cultural values and stereotypes motivate characters to act or react in certain ways.
What other examples do you see in the literary works from which to choose?
Select a story or poem from the provided list.
Make sure you have a clear understanding of what culture is.
Begin by learning about the culture in which your story or poem takes place.
The importance of time and location is critical in this case.
If you ignore time periods or locations, you might get the wrong impression about your characters. Consider the difference between city life and life on a farm, for example. There are cultural differences between the two locations. Although mass media has given most of us a common popular culture, make sure you have considered the specific culture that has influenced your author’s writing in addition to American culture.
