Romes Sustainability and Infrastructure in Connection to Tourism: Summary
?Tourism is an essential economic activity around the world. People travel from their native countries for miles to visit specific sites and attractions. Therefore, infrastructure is a critical component that facilitates tourist activities. To start with, air service is required to transport tourists over long distances. Apart from that, infrastructure comprises
of local roads, telecommunications, and plumping. Local roads are needed to carry visitors from large getaways to more remote regions. On the other hand, communication is
vital to keep in touch with others, whereas plumping ensures an adequate supply of water. Furthermore, tourism in a country depends on social infrastructure. Such includes
the culture of a people, science, health services, education, and public administration. Therefore, this implies that both technical infrastructure and social infrastructure are
imperative in promoting domestic and international tourism.
Rome is an excellent case study for tourist attractions concerning infrastructure. Since time immemorial, Rome has been known as a famous tourist destination center
because of the vast cultural heritage that the city inherited from the ancient Roman Empire. In spite of this, however, tourism in Rome is collapsing because of poor
infrastructure. Potholes have severely destroyed the roads in Rome to the point of causing accidents to cycling and damaging vehicles in the city. These roads become even more dangerous during the rainy season because clogged water conceals the potholes from watchful drivers, motorists, and pedestrians. Apart from roads, Rome suffers
from expensive electricity costs. Italy is ranked as the country with the third-highest cost of electricity globally. As a result, this causes hikes in tourist activity prices to
compensate for the extra costs of input.
Another significant problem that is affecting tourism in Rome is waste management. After all the landfills of the city were rendered non-operational, civilians resorted to
dumping their household waste on streets. Eventually, these dumpsters become a haven for air and water-borne diseases. The sewer line in Rome is equally pathetic. As a
matter of fact, Rome still relies on a mains sewer line that was constructed in ancient periods after early Romans had just established the city. The aftermath of this is that
when temperatures rise in the sewer tunnel, fumes are released from underground into the air. Apart from that, leakages that direct sewage to water channels occasionally occur in Rome. As a result, clean water is not guaranteed. These are examples of infrastructural deficiencies that are derailing tourists from visiting Rome. Therefore, this
proves that the city needs to renovate its infrastructure to attract more tourists.
Concerning garbage, Rome can respond by purchasing an incinerator. This would save the city numerous millions that are otherwise used to export waste products to
Germany and Austria. Also, the establishment of recycling plants will make it easier to manage waste products while reducing the cost of producing new commodities. Tourist
companies in Rome may need to resort to solar energy because of the high costs of electricity in the city. By doing so, they could lower their costs of production and reduce their overall quote price to visitors. Tourism is a vast industry that contributed significantly to sustainability and development goals. By adopting a recycling plant, Rome would
be suppressing its carbon footprint. Furthermore, the use of solar panels in Rome will potentially expand the use of green energy in Italy. Also, the establishment of proper sewer lines will help to maintain biodiversity that was previously degraded when human waste is released into water bodies such as rivers and oceans. Hence, this proves that
tourism and infrastructure are synergetic forces that create economic development.?
