For this essay you will be investigating select texts that fall into the category of “long-form” journalism. The resulting essay will be a discussion of the “writerly” choices made by the author (tone, style, organization, use of quotes, concluding lines, balancing different viewpoints. You will discuss how closely the author’s or authors’ work follows the SPJ Code of Ethics (Links to an external site.); take into account the four main principles. You will also need to investigate the author’s or authors’ social media presence in order to evaluate how effectively they offer a thoughtful, balanced treatment of their subject matter.
Again, take into account the way the style of the reporting fits, deviates from, or rejects the ethical framework established by the SJA. You will need to scroll through the articles and tweets and retweets linked to that social media account, and then evaluate how related materials inform your reading of the “journalistic integrity” of the author.
