The following are the course objectives:
CO-2: Apply musical vocabulary, concepts, and critical listening skills to a specific composer or musical style.
CO-3: Examine the influences of social, political, and cultural factors on Western and non-Western music.
CO-4: Investigate various musical styles from throughout the world.
Description:
In this assignment, you will construct an educational website about a non-Western culture’s traditional music. (Note that in the context of this assignment, “world music” refers to music that is not based on the Western musical heritage.) If you’re not sure if your chosen topic is a type of non-Western music, talk to your instructor, who can help you figure it out.) When choosing your topic, make sure it is a style of music that is still alive and well, so you can discover musical examples and address all of the assignment’s requirements. The WK8 “Let’s Explore the World Through Music” Discussion will include a link to your completed webpage.
Wix.com will be used to create your website, which is free and simple to use. Wix uses drag-and-drop technology to make it simple to edit and customize your website. All you have to do is create an account with your email address and password. A beginner’s guide on building Wix websites may be found here. There’s also a fantastic video tutorial on how to use Wix to create a website. Wix also features a fantastic Help Center where you can get answers to any issues you might have while building your website.
The following should be included on the website:
1. A synopsis of the selected culture, including a brief history.
2. A quick summary of some of the culture’s beliefs and practices.
3. A description of the instruments utilized in the music of that culture.
4. An explanation of the culture’s music’s major characteristics, such as melody, harmony, timbre, texture, rhythm, and shape. (If the type of music you choose does not include one or more of these musical components, you will need to explain why.)
5. A detailed overview of one piece of music from the culture. Include at least one musical example, such as a link to a YouTube performance. Include a description of the musical example as well.
The parts shown above can be combined on one page of your website or separated into several pages.
On your webpage, include your name. Photos and video should be included on your website (either linked or embedded). Embedded images and videos must be referenced.
Avoid styles of music from the United States, Canada, or Europe, including jazz or any type of pop music, as your choice of world music must be a non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or non-Western or (including hip hop). A pop or rock band from Europe or Japan, for example, would be inappropriate for this task. Celtic or Irish music are likewise not ideal musical styles because they are European in nature. Also, because most students are already familiar with reggae music, refrain from using it as a topic.
Valid, academic sources are required (i.e. Please do not use non-academic websites, such as Wikipedia or About.com). Direct quotes should make up no more than 15% of your website, and they must be in quotation marks. In the body of the text and in the reference section, direct quotes and paraphrased material must be cited.
Submit your website link in Assignments after it has been completed and published. Then, when answering the WK8 Discussion topic, you’ll provide a link to your website in the WK8: Exploring the World via Music thread.
Take into account the following:
Here’s an example of a website that satisfied the assignment’s criteria. (There is a little too much straight quotation on this example page, and the musical example needs a more extended explanation.)
Note: If you are a military person serving overseas with limited internet access and are unable to complete this project, please contact your teacher for a different assignment.
Here are some Wix website examples. Allow your imaginative imaginations to guide you in the creation of your websites!
If you have any questions or concerns concerning this project, please post them in our classroom’s “Questions” topic. If you have a personal question, send it to your instructor via email.
