INSTRUCTIONS
The leader of a social movement is only as essential as the movement itself. A social movement’s leader(s) must be charismatic and able to capture an audience. Body language analysis is taught to political scientists and historians, notably during debates and speeches.
For this assignment, you will view Dr. Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech (Links to an external site.) and Alicia Garza’s Black Lives Matter speech (Links to an external site.) and respond to the questions stated below. In the two talks, pay careful attention to the following points.
The significance of body language when giving a speech.
Gestures, cadence, and delivery style are all factors to consider.
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS
Give a synopsis of the two speeches.
To Alicia Garza’s speech, compare Dr. King’s charisma, power, and enthusiasm for capturing his audience. What, if any, parallels can you find? What are the distinctions, if any, between the two?
What role does the location of the speeches play in the messages they deliver? Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech was given in a church and at the Lincoln Memorial; however, today, we have social media and additional ways to communicate. Is it true that messaging makes a difference?
Explain how the crowd in Dr. King’s speeches is similar to the audience in Alicia Garza’s speech. Do the speeches and the audience have any similarities or differences?
