Instructions:
Begin by watching the introductory video and reading the description of John Brown’s attack on Harper’s Ferry in 1859 at the beginning of the document pack. After that, read the documents in the John Brown document pack. As a guide to the contents of each document, use the comprehension questions at the end. (The document pack can be found in the forum.)
The First Post
John Brown began an attempt to seize a federal armory in Harper’s Ferry, Virginia, on October 16, 1859. His plan was to arm slaves and incite a slave revolt. Today, John Brown’s actions are divisive. You should respond to the following question in this forum: Was John Brown a hero or a lunatic (or something in between)?
1) Explain your overall perspective on John Brown in your first post. 2) Discuss three pro-John Brown arguments from Documents A, C, and E, and explain whether you find them persuasive; 3) Discuss three counter-arguments to John Brown’s actions from Documents B, D, and F, and explain whether you believe they are persuasive.
Colleagues’ Reaction
You should respond to two colleagues’ posts. (Please note that these will only be visible after you have made your first post.)
In each response to a colleague, you should 1) discuss one point in their argument that you found persuasive and explain why; and 2) discuss one point that your colleague could improve or consider and explain why.
Sources with Notes
To respond to the question, you should only use the textbook and the documents provided. You should cite a document whenever you make a reference to it for example (Document A). You should use quotation marks if you use words directly from a document. Please keep in mind that it is usually more effective to express a document’s argument in your own words, and if you must use a direct quotation, you must always explain its significance.
