I’m working on a history writing question and need a sample draft to help me learn.
Section one asks you to identify six out of nine from the list of identification terms below. Please write a short paragraph explaining the “who, what, where, when, and why” of the following, paying particular attention to the “why” (or “so what”). The majority of points will be awarded based on your understanding of the importance of the term within the context of this course. That is to say, how does the person, concept, event, or idea contribute to an understanding of a larger point in this course (to restate the point: I grade based on course materials, not Wikipedia entries)? Each term counts for ten points (a total of sixty points). You will not receive extra points for answering more than six.
Choose six from the following terms:
“L’état c’est moi”
Shtetls
Westernization
The Sorrows of Young Werther
“sodomites”
Charlotte Corday
Concordat of 1801
Burschenschaften
Chartism
undefined
Section two asks you to write an essay in response to the prompt below. Excellent essays will make use of all course materials (including primary sources and terms not listed above) and will address the question(s) in full. The essay is worth forty points. There is no predetermined length to the essay. Quality surely trumps quantity. Strive to provide specific examples for the points you make. I will not assess writing in the exam, and I recognize that time is a limiting factor. I don’t expect you to regurgitate the entire textbook.
Essay prompt: Although the term “globalization” was created in the twentieth century, the practice of uniting global civilizations through a multitude of practices is far from new. In this essay, describe the innumerable ways that “Western” Civilization came into contact with other civilizations, continents, ideas, and groups of people. Please consider the implications for Europe of contact with others and the different reactions of individuals, groups, or governments across the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. In what ways was Europe affected by globalization, and in what ways was the rest of the world affected by the same process? Excellent essays will treat evidence from all three centuries.
