This site commemorates the mostly ignored voice of resistance and dissent coming from the GI movement. The sources are essentially divided into two major categories: dissent, those who questioned the war through utterances, opinion and writing and secondly, those who may champion the more direct form of resistance and action. It is further separated into different media ranging from the culture of GI Coffee Houses and their printing of underground newspapers to acts of mobilization against conscription and the war effort. The finished product is a collection of primary artifacts that you will pair with secondary sources to create a narrative that answers the following questions. Once you have carefully examined the material, create a formal, 750-1,000 word narrative of the resistance movement which answers the following three questions. Aside from your own analysis and synthesis of the website you will back up your own assessment with at least 2 secondary source and our textbook.
What generalizations can be made about the early stages of interaction among the GIs in Southeast Asia (Vietnam) and how did this change over the course of the conflict?
What were the more common forms of dissent and resistance against authority, the Nixon administration and the war in general?
How does this collection reinforce or contradict previously held perceptions/stereotypes of the “average” protestor or voice of dissent during the war?
*Note: You are required to explicitly use the at least SEVEN of the site’s documents throughout your essay. You should properly cite each of the documents used with Chicago Manual of footnote citation.
The website review shall be typed, double-spaced, and in a 12-point Times New Roman font. There will be 20 possible grade points awarded for submission of the “GI Press” analysis.
