The roles of Greek and Etruscan women in art differ drastically due to the immensely different roles that these women had in their respective societies. Greek women were often left out of the male dominant public scene, thus the art that depicted these women was typically for the purpose of worshipping female deities or to create fertility images. It is widely speculated that the Cycladic statuettes from Syros could have been used as fertility images. Later in the Classical period, the treatment of Aphrodite put an emphasis on nudity, whereas goddesses like Nike had previously been portrayed in clothing. The focus on emotion in this period led to the humanization of the Greek deities. With the exception of deities, females are seldom depicted during the Hellenistic period. One work entitled “Old Market Women” uses the era’s trademark realism to portray the lower classes of society.
As opposed to the Greek, Etruscan women made appearances in public scenes and had relative independence. Etruscan women kept their name and even owned property independently. This stark difference in livelihood had a substantial impact on the representation of Etruscan women in art. A Sarcophagus with a reclining couple from the Banditaccia necropolis demonstrates the relative equality with which the Etruscan women lived. It was considered unorthodox that a man and woman would even share the same banqueting couch. Furthermore, the primary function of Etruscan art was to represent the deceased, so many works of women in this period were funerary in nature. In contrast, the Greek works were more concerned with fertility and the idealization of deities.
The disparities in Greek and Etruscan depictions of women can be attributed to their vastly different social norms. As women in Greece were expected to exist only in the private life of the household, they were commonly depicted as figures of fertility. On the other hand, in Etruria were women held a higher status, women would be shown alongside their spousal counterpart.
