Instructions for Essay 4:
Choose a problem that is important or interesting to you and propose a solution to it. Your proposal should include two basic parts: 1) an explanation of the problem and 2) persuasion to implement your solution for the problem, step by step.
Your paper should include the following elements:
I. The Problem
1. A claim that:
A) proposes specific action, whether a change of practice or policy, to resolve a problem or need, and
B) is suitable for your audience.
2. Reasons that:
A) show clearly the problem and its significance,
B) relate the proposal claim to the problem or need, and
C) include appropriate outside research to support claim
3. Counter Argument
A) Possible rebuttals to your proposal, and
B) your response
II. The Solution
1. A second claim that:
A) shows that the proposal will work to resolve the problem or need.
2. Establish a plan that:
A) explains how to solve the stated problem with clear details,
B) offers a solution, step by step, and
C) persuades the audience to get involved
Paper Length: 3 pages, excluding the Works Cited page in MLA format, 12-point Times New Roman font, double spaced
Outside Sources: A minimum of 2 outside sources is required for your essay. You do not have to include a source for the problem portion of your essay, but you need at least one source in the solution part of your argument. If you decide not to include research in the description of the problem, then you will need to include two sources in the solution. Acceptable sources include interviews, transcripts from documentaries, articles from organizations, governments, or published material from well-established newspapers (see list below), magazines, etc. Articles from the database are encouraged.
