? It is the argument that you make in your paper that reflects the main idea. The sentence that captures your position on this main idea is a Thesis statement
? Should be as clear and specific as possible. A thesis is never a question, but a statement.
? It is not merely a topic, it reflects an opinion or judgement that a writer has made.
? A strong thesis requires proof, you should support your thesis with detailed supporting evidence Your paper will have 4 distinct parts: I. Abstract The abstract is a brief overview of the entire paper. An abstract summarizes in one paragraph, the major aspects of the entire paper in a sequence that includes:
(1) the overall purpose of the study and the research topic that you investigated;
(2) the basic design of your study;
(3) major findings or trends found as a result of your analysis; and
(4) a brief summary of your interpretation and conclusion. The abstract should summarize your topic, analysis, concepts, and conclusion. Although it is at the beginning of your paper, you should write your entire paper first, and then construct your Abstract last, since it will summarize the contents of your entire paper. II. Introduction Introduction should clearly identify the subject of interest. The key is to summarize for the reader what is known about the specific topic before you did your analysis. It consists of a general review of the important research literature that establishes a foundation for understanding key elements of the topic.
(1) Background information on the topic
(2) Clearly list your thesis statement
(3) Why is this topic relevant or important?
(4) What are some current trends about the topic?
(5) Briefly explain the major points you plan to cover in your paper III. Developmental Concepts Conceptual analysis consists in analyzing concepts in order to gain knowledge or a better understanding of a particular philosophical issue in which the concept is involved. In conceptual analysis, a concept is chosen for examination. You will list and elaborate on 4 concepts from the text-book from any chapter. Select a concept that is indicative of your chosen topic. Include a summary from one of the references to accompany the concept. You will discuss how the reference explains the concept.
(1) Clearly identify the concept by name and its definition
(2) how does the concept contribute to the topic
(3) what are the psycho-social connections of the concept and the topic
(4) Explain how the concept is positively or negatively related to the topic.
(5) Each concept must also have a summary from one of the references. Be sure to list the title of the reference in your summary. For instance, you may choose the concept, attachment theory; trust vs mis-trust stage from Eriksons Psychosocial Stages of Development; distalproximal development. Be sure that you are listing developmental concepts from the text-book. IV. Conclusion The conclusion is intended to help the reader understand why your research should matter to them after they have finished reading the paper. The conclusion wraps up your paper. You should briefly summarize the main points of your paper. Be sure to include:
(1) discussion of your own interpretation of the topic and findings
(2) was there anything surprising in this research
(3) what are some possible solutions or alternatives to explore
(4) what are some points that you consider to be relevant? What questions remain?
(5) Implications for further research (6) what do you want the reader to remember about your study?
