Argument Position Essay on Trigger Warnings
Description
Outline for Position Essay (breakdown of each portion of the essay)
Introduction (with thesis statement)
· Hook: Essay has a first line that gets the reader’s attention, and draws them into the topic
· Warm-Up: The middle of the intro paragraph should give the reader more information about the topic at hand (in this case, the debate). Give the reader the general topic and also help them to think about both options before presenting your thesis
· Thesis: Your thesis should present the side you are arguing for and your three of your reasons why you are arguing for this particular position.
· For example: While todays increasing focus on technology certainly changes the way we live, these changes include many new, useful, and efficient ways to communicate and connect with one another, helping us to connect more quickly, from a greater distance, and with more people.
Body Paragraph 1(Optional): Definition Paragraph: This paragraph can be used to define the words or phrases you are working with. As we’ve discussed in a previous argument, defining what you mean by “the luxuries of contemporary life” will help us understand what you time frame you mean by contemporary life. Remember, it is fine if you use a particular definition of contemporary life. If you don’t find a definition paragraph useful helpful, don’t feel pressured to use it.
· For example: The term welfare system is referring to any type of government assistance that citizens may apply for and receive.
Paragraph 2 (Reason 1 supporting agree or disagree): Explain your first reason for supporting your thesis. Make sure that you give supporting evidence that this particular reason is true. Use your own logic, statistics and other methods of persuasion to make your case. Think about historical analogies, inductive examples and value proofs that you might use to persuade your audience.
· Remember to have a topic sentence to each body paragraph. This helps your essay flow smoothly.
· Use at least ONE direct quote from an outside source for each body paragraph in this essay.
Paragraph 3 (Reason 2): Explain your second reason for supporting your thesis. Make sure that you give supporting evidence that this particular reason is true. Use your own logic, statistics and perhaps other methods of persuasion to make your case.
Paragraph 4: Counter-Argument: Give reasons why people would doubt your reason. Be objective with this. Don’t misrepresent the opposing side or paint them as ignorant. Give reasons for why people might question your idea. However you will want to set this up for your own rebuttal.
Paragraph 5: Reason 3: This paragraph should be your third reason. You will want to use this paragraph to defend your stance against the opposing argument.
Conclusion: Sum up your argument and make a final case that your position on the issue is the best stance to take. You don’t have to be “right” about everything and that there are no legitimate counter-arguments, BUT you do need to show that your position is better than the opposition’s for people to take. Or that the pros to your stance outweigh the cons.
