Painting Mediums Demonstrations with Buon Fresco Painting Demo Question
Buon Fresco Painting Demo (NOVA) (This is one of the oldest mediums in the world. It can last 10,000 years) Here you will see how we think Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel Ceiling using the medium in 1504. Please watch the video and answer the questions with some detail for full credit (6 points total)
What is used to create the buon fresco?
Can the plaster be placed on the wall in large amounts—why or why not?
What is a giornata?
There are two general ways in which to transfer a drawing to the surface of the buon fresco—what are they and explain them a bit.
About how many colors did Michelangelo use to create the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel?
Did the color change as the work dried?
Why is this technique so durable—explain and you may draw this out if it helps.
Encaustic Painting as a medium: This is probably the second or third oldest type of painting medium. Was developed by the Egyptians and Greeks. Artists paint with melted bees wax and pigment. You may need to watch me and listen to me and my lecture for the answers here. You may watch the video below too but my lecture may be enough for you to get through the questions.
Tell me three or four of the important items needed to make an encaustic painting:
What are three advantages of Encaustic painting?
What are three disadvantages of Encaustic painting?
Why do I have to have a heat gun for this type of painting?
Tempera Paint (developed around the year 1000). It over takes encaustic painting because it is less toxic and easier to work with in general History paintings, Portrait paintings, still life, and even a few landscapes were painted with this material. It will remain popular until Oil painting is developed in Northern Europe in the 1400s. It will fall out of favor by 1450…and will not become popular again until 1950. (4 points)

Mavis Smith video
How did she get the residual egg white off the yolk?
Why do you puncture the egg yolk?
What is an underpainting—listen to my lecture for this?
About how many layers of paint does Mavis tend to have on each painting?
How does she hide the brushstrokes created using this medium?
https://greenjulie.com/work/egg-tempera-demo/
When was egg tempera first used? (my lecture)
Why did artists like this medium?
What do we combine with the egg yolk to make the tempera paint?
What type of consistency is desirable for the mixture above (in #3)
Why do artists have to use panels when painting with tempera rather than canvas?
What type of paint brush does Green have to use when painting with the tempera? Why?
What does she use to buff out or make her work shiny like enamel?
The invention of Oil Painting—this is a later invention (about 1426 or so by people in Belgium or the Netherlands). This is the Renaissance period—so it is not that long ago. Oil painting has many advantages over Tempera and really overtakes or ousts tempera painting until the 1950s, as I stated above.
Why did artists use green as the base color for flesh in the medieval and Renaissance period?
What colors were painted on top of the green? What may have happened to these colors over time?
What types of strokes did the Renaissance artists use to create volume/shading and highlighting of a figure? (They cannot blend…so have to use certain strokes)
Why is oil paint and advantage over tempera (you should have two)?
Why is oil paint a disadvantage today?
Watercolor Painting: It has been around for a long time but was not used seriously and as an actual system (7)
What three types of paintings did Renaissance artists create when using Watercolors?
Why was watercolor an advantage when painting during the Renaissance (at least two things)
Why did they prefer watercolor for miniatures (portraits)?
How many layers did Hillyard have to use to create his wife’s likeness?
Why was watercolor useful to illustrate books or early encyclopedias? (2 things)
Kelly’s lecture over watercolor—why was watercolor not considered a serious art form until the late 1800s?
