Articles about the Clash of Civilizations Analytical Essay
After you’ve read both papers, please examine and write a four-page essay comparing, contrasting, and contemplating the following:
1. Huntington claims that the new international order that emerges after the conclusion of the Cold War would be organized and formed by cultural conflicts, such as Western civilisation vs. non-Western nations (notably Confucian and Islamic
societies). As a result, he argues that America, as the West’s leader, needs to increase its military spending and architecture, as well as direct its economic and diplomatic resources, toward defeating or limiting non-Western aggression. In addition, it can use its cultural attractiveness (soft power) to win over countries that want to “be more western.” What do you think motivated Huntington to write this essay, and where do you agree and disagree, and why
2. In response, Said has set out to disprove Huntington’s premise, which he argues is a myth. He specifically points to the West’s colonial history as the source of present thinking’s problems. He points out that the major European colonists (France, Britain, Germany, and Portugal) all believed they were on a “civilizing mission,” or a commitment to “civilize” non-Western (European) nations. He is particularly offended by the West’s “noble” idea of civilizing people through violent
means, which runs counter to the West’s principles of freedom, Christian love, and liberty. Why do you think Said felt driven to respond to Huntington by writing this piece? Mr. Said, do you agree or disagree with him, and why?
3. What may each author have to say about America’s own cultural and civilizational concerns, as well as our own political problems and shortcomings, and how this might affect our “legitimacy” in the international community? In light of
everything you’ve read, how do you think America is today perceived?
