Assignment for SOC 300: Writing About Data
Part One
Wealth, defined as all of an individual’s assets, is difficult to quantify because it is frequently hidden. As a rough measure of wealth, we’ll utilize the median value of dwellings and the rate at which that value increases over time. The median home value in the United States was $119,600 at the time of the census in 2000; however, housing values reflect local markets, so we should expect large differences in the communities we’re looking into. Table 1 shows the house values in each of the four communities we’re looking into.
Table 1 shows wealth in 2000 (as measured by home values).

Writing about data (Soc 300) (2)
Housing is essential as a wealth generator if its value rises over time. Table 2 shows the home values in these localities in 1990 and 2000, as well as the % change in values between these two dates (the percentage change was calculated by subtracting the value in 2000 from the value in 1990, dividing this amount by the 1990 value, then multiplying by 100).
