Instructions for cultural activity report
Before the end of week 9, visit a museum or art gallery and finish Option 1: Museum visit. If you can’t go to a museum or gallery in your region, finish Option 2: Create and curate an alternative museum of your own art (see for both options below). The museum or gallery you visit (option 1) or build (option 2) must contain art or objects from the time you attend this course.
Option 1: Option 1: Museum visit
Write a 500750 word 23 page report describing your experiences.
Visit a nearby museum or gallery. Select a minimum of 5-10 works of art by 5-10 different artists from different periods of time, from the 18th to present times, covered in the book.
Identify clearly the location, date and initial response when you reach the museum or gallery.
Fourteen different artists provide a description and summary of at least 510 works of art.
Provide each selected piece with a photo if the location allows. (Some museums forbid photography tightly.)
Explain your initial reaction to the art you have chosen and why you have chosen each part.
Describe the role of the founder and curator of the museum.
Use the text class as a reference (additional sources are fine but not necessary unless required by your content). Your report should provide links between what you observe in your work and topics studied in your course and text.
Here are some tips on personally visiting a museum:
It makes sense to approach a museum the first time an experienced visitor comes to explore a city. Find out what museums you can access and find exhibits that intrigue you.
Find out what kind of exhibitions the museum you choose is now housing. Start with the exhibits that interest you, or look at that first if there is a traveling exhibit. Then afterwards, you can check out other exhibitions if you have time.
Keep in mind that you do not judge the quality of your experience by the time you spend in galleries or the quantity of works of art you see.
The idea is to locate 510 works of art by 510 artists who excite you and then contemplate the work. Most museums include benches to sit and study a certain piece. While you’re there, take notes.
Option 2: Creating and preserving your own museum of art
This is an alternative way to tour a museum or gallery of art. Select and curate 510 works of art to be included in your own art museum for this choice. Use your textbook and your online sources to find these artworks. The Google Arts and Culture webpage at the Google Cultural Institute is a helpful resource for this task. You can immerse yourself in cultural encounters from over a thousand museums across 70 countries covering art, history and the world’s wonders.

Note: For both alternatives, the same rubric is utilized. In one portion of the rubric, you will examine the function of the founder and curator of the museum. This information can be found on the website of the museum or in museum materials for Option 1. For Option 2, you hold the positions of museum founder and curator.
