Assignment on Medical Office Management
Part A: Kayla Christianson, CMA, has worked for three physicians’ cardiology practice for six years. She is a CAAHEP-accredited school graduate. In addition, during her compulsory externship, Kayla had considerable hands-on instruction doing ECGs.
Kayla has conducted an ECG for Mrs. Warner, a 76-year-old patient, as requested by Dr. Hsu. Kayla’s supervisor, Dr. Hsu, has called her to explain that he was running late completing rounds at the hospital. He instructed her to interpret Mrs. Warner’s ECG for him, sign his name, and fax the report to Mrs. Warner’s referring internist, who was eagerly awaiting the results.
Provide thorough responses to each of the questions below. The length of your response should be two (2) pages.
Would this favor come within the AAMA parameters of her responsibilities, given Kayla’s education, training, and years of experience as a CMA?
Is there any part of Dr. Hsu’s request that falls inside the parameters? If so, whatever portion(s) are you talking about? Is it ever permissible to deviate from these rules?
What is Kayla’s best course of action in dealing with Dr. Hsu?
Part B: For more than two years, Linda Lewis, a medical assistant, has worked for Drs. The gerontologists Norek and Klein. Two registered nurses, a medical laboratory technician, and a medical social worker round out the team. One of the doctor’s patients’ daughter has just called the office. She is distressed by her mother’s apparent lowered capacity and insists on consulting with the doctor.
Linda notes that during patient appointment hours, both physicians only receive emergency calls, but she will take a lengthy message. This caller, on the other hand, claims that not only should her call be treated as an emergency, but that she will sue the doctor if it is not.
Provide thorough responses to each of the questions below. The length of your response should be two (2) pages.
What should Linda do right away to calm things down?
Is this clearly a scenario where one of the registered nurses or the medical social worker should take the call?
Is this a situation where the physician should be summoned to the phone due to the danger of a lawsuit?
Linda has no way of knowing whether or not this is a true emergency. Is it her responsibility as a medical assistant to make such a decision?
Is there any reason for Linda to engage in conversation with the caller because she is the patient’s daughter rather than the patient herself? Is Linda ethically obligated to keep the fact that the woman’s mother is a patient a secret?
