When we use research in our writing, it’s critical that we tell our readers where the knowledge came from and give credit where credit is due. Giving proper credit to others for their words or work helps you build trust with your reader, which increases your credibility and strengthens your case.
Discuss an instance in which someone utilized another person’s words or ideas without giving proper credit in your post. Perhaps you were the one who did it. Perhaps it was one of your acquaintances.
What effect did the person taking credit for the words or thoughts of someone else have?
What should the other person have done if he or she could have offered sufficient credit?

I used to work in an organization where, like most companies, the majority of the work was done via email. There was a lot going on at the time, and we had to send out formal notifications and other communications concerning policy and procedure changes on a regular basis. My boss was new to the company and didn’t know much about our policies or procedures, so he’d ask me to prepare these communications so he could get started. He would, however, often leave things as they were and send them up to his boss to be sent out. When he sent up emails, he would copy me on them so that when the recipient pressed reply all, I would see the response, which was invariably Great job, [Boss]! with no acknowledgment of my contribution. It disturbed me that he took credit for my words without acknowledging the labor I had put in. It made me feel unloved and undervalued. When he sent the communications up to his boss, he might have simply said “we” worked on them together to give me full credit. I wouldn’t have objected to him sharing credit, but simply taking credit for my effort was infuriating. As a result of that event, I always try to give credit to others when working on projects with them, and if someone on my team achieves something, I make sure they get credit for it.
