#2 Gerald is a recreational cyclist. He enjoys exercising and started to ride his bike because running long distances began to wear on his knees. He started out with a good stride but 15 minutes into the workout, he began to feel alarming pain in his chest. He had to stop because he couldn’t catch his breath. In this image, it shows Gerald trying to catch his breath and attempting to slow down his heart rate. This same incident happened twice before, once while he was swimming and another time when he was playing tennis in the hot sun.
Gerald comes into your office with his complaints and you take his vitals. His BP 150/110 Heart rate 104 ( look up normal vitals). The primary care doctor ask if heart disease runs in his family and Gerald states that his father died of a massive heart attack. Your offer refers Gerald to a cardiologist based on his presentation and his family history.
While at the office of the cardiologist, the following labs were ran: troponin, calcium, magnesium and sodium. All the lab work came back normal so the cardiologist prescribes a beta 1 blocker for Gerald. The doctor instructs Gerald to take one pill every day for the next 30 days.
After 3 weeks of taking the beta blocker, Gerald is back on his bike and feeling great again.
