The gruesome battles of the Civil War certainly dominated the experiences of soldiers, and, in turn, such battles have been at the center of the study of the war.
However, the Civil War was a constant and all-encompassing experience, extending beyond the immediacy of the battle front. As such, developing a critical understanding the war requires looking beyond the battles to consider soldiers’ full experience of the war, as well as how this total experience shaped soldiers’ identities.
