Connection Between Christianity and Europe Throughout the Centuries
Choose only one option.
1) We have seen the great importance of the Christian church as a unifying force in medieval Europe. But we’ve also seen ways in which Latin Christendom was far from unified, much less homogenous, as popes and other church leaders faced frequent challenges to their power and moral influence. What kinds of problems did they face, and how did they go about, from roughly 1000 to 1300, strengthening their power and influence – whether over Christian believers, lower church officials, or lords, kings, and hell-raising knights?
2) Over the last weeks of History 100, we observed two major movements of expansion and conquest arising from the lands of Europe. The first, commencing with Urban II’s 1096 appeal to the Franks, led to the crusades in the Middle East. Then, starting in the mid-fifteenth century, Europeans launched their Age of Exploration, which saw several powers engage in overseas exploration, trade, settlement, and colonization.
In both cases we see religious enthusiasms rubbing up against motives of material gain and self-interest. Yet if both movements were shaped by economic considerations as well as religious zeal, clearly these elements combined differently when we compare the two. Write an essay that identifies commonalities and points of difference between these two colonizing movements.
