Re: Topic 2 DQ 2
Good evening.
I think that the only exemptions that there should be in religions expression should be ones that cause physical harm or death to a person as well as ones that would cause mental harm to a person. For example, this would include human sacrifices, kidnapping and torture, or mentally causing fear into others (such as saying death to Americans). I do believe in free speech and understand where other religions believe the way they do towards Americans, but it’s just not right to say something like that and strike fear into another person in the name of religious freedom.
Re: Topic 2 DQ 2
Hello Class,
This subject is certainly one with political implications. On one hand you have people that believe in free expression of religion no matter what. On the other hand, you have people who are offended by everything and think religious freedom should be curtailed. What we have to realize is that there is a middle ground that needs to be found. A libertarian perspective is what I agree with most, it states that a person is free to express their religious beliefs as long as you do not infringe on the rights of others. This is the same concept as you can’t yell fire in a crowded movie theater and expect there to be no repercussions for doing so.
Therefore, I don’t believe there should be any restrictions on religious observance as long as it does not interfere with the rights of others. This brings to mind the case of the Kate Baker in Colorado. The owners of the hotel they were trying to book for their wedding is accused of subscibing to an accommodationists perspective because they alegedly did not want to bake a cake for a gay couple based on religious objections. They alegedely believed that their Christian faith trumped the beliefs of the gay couple so they refused to host the wedding for them. However, they suffered the consequences of the community backlash that ensued.
Sincerely,
-Bradley
