In this project, you will use data to investigate the educational experiences of different racial groups in the United States, focusing on the real-world example of race in college admissions. For reference, at the University of Arizona Global Campus, the admissions process is open, with few hurdles to entry into a program of study. As a result, the student body at the University of Arizona Global Campus is extremely diverse. However, with typical college admissions methods in the United States, this may not always be the case.
The American Sociological Association (ASA) filed a petition with the United States Supreme Court in response to a Michigan Law School case. The idea is for you to think critically about the empirical evidence and summary arguments while making your own conclusions regarding the college admissions process.
Following your reading of the ASA’s position on this issue, respond to the following:
Summarize (Links to an external site.) the main points of ASA’s argument. This summary should include the following information:
An outline of the ASA’s viewpoint.
Residential segregation, school segregation, economic disadvantages, stigma, and the significance of race-based life experiences to university admissions are all discussed as important arguments for ASA’s perspective.
Please be sure to express the ASA’s perspective on these topics in your own words.
Make your case for why college admissions officers should consider race (as one of several variables) when determining who to accept to institutions. Make sure to back up your claims with scholarly proof and factual facts. Your grade is unaffected by which position you choose. However, you’ll be scored on how well you back up your claim with scholarly proof and empirical facts, as well as how much thinking you put into it. Your argument must have the following elements:
Be well-thought-out and based on scholarly research and empirical data rather than on personal beliefs and/or irrational opinions.
Explain why you’ve chosen the job you’ve taken (using facts and empirical data).
Propose either an alternative way to resolving racial inequities in college admissions or a solution for implementing racial consideration in actual college applications, depending on your opinion.
If you believe that race, along with other life experiences, should not be used in college admissions, you must also provide solutions to address current racial inequities in educational success.
If you believe that race, along with other life experiences, should be included in college admissions, you must also suggest how this could be best implemented in a real-world scenario.
The Assignment on Race and College Admissions:
Must be 8 to 10 double-spaced pages in length (excluding title and reference pages) and formatted according to the University of Arizona Global Campus Writing Center’s APA style guidelines (Links to an external site.).
A title page (Links to an external site.) must be included, containing the following information:
Paper’s title
Name of the student
Name and number of the course
Name of the instructor
Date of submission

Critical thought must be applied to the paper’s topic.
Must conclude with a reaffirmation of your thesis (Links to an external site.)
At least five scholarly sources must be used in addition to the textbook.
