Overview
When epidemiologic data on the incidence of mental and substance use problems is matched to the country’s behavioral health care needs, it reveals service gaps. Continuing organizational and financial changes as a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), particularly how Medicaid expansion affects behavioral health services, is a major source of worry. In addition, the homeless and incarcerated mentally ill populations face unique obstacles. There is a labour deficit in behavioral health as well. This is another area where health-care organizations across the country can improve.
Examine the graphs in Figures 10-1, Prevalence of Any Mental Illness Among U.S. Adults; 10-2, Prevalence of Serious Mental Illness Among U.S. Adults; 10-3, Top Leading Disease or Disorder Categories Contributing to U.S. Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) (2010); and Figure 10-4, U.S. DALYs for Mental and Behavioral Disorders as a Percentage of Total U.S
Geographic dispersion of providers, financial constraints, a lack of or inadequate health insurance, stigma, misunderstandings about the treatability of illnesses, personal and provider attitudes, cultural challenges, and a poorly organized care delivery system are some of the barriers to care (see page 285 of the textbook). Also consider children’s and teen mental health treatments. Consider recent occurrences such as school shootings, movie theater shootings, concert shootings, and so on, and have difficult dialogues regarding mental health.

Analyze the graphs and figures indicated and report your results in behavioral health in a three to four-page paper.
Describe the 2008 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act.
Explain the National Institute of Mental Health’s function in the existing health-care system, as well as its impact on access to and utilization of health-care services.
