Discussion On Variable Definition And Measurement
In the research community, there are two well-known sayings. First, we live in a multivariate world, so multivariate study is required, and second, trash in, garbage out. The first statement reflects the normal state of the human condition, in which a given phenomena is usually influenced by several causes. At least multiple variables are related to the major variable of interest, as stated in research words. So, how do you decide which variables to investigate? Physical health status, socialization, stress, coping, and access to resources are some of the highly relevant variables that should also be included in a primary depression study while conducting depression research with the elderly. There is no single characteristic that can explain depression in this population on its own.
The second statement, “trash in, garbage out,” is well-known among quantitative statisticians and is self-evident. If the measures and data obtained are of poor quality, every action and result that follows will be of poor quality, negatively affecting reliability, validity, and credibility. Survey studies that are well-designed and performed have a strong emphasis on measurement. They are dependable in the sense that measurements are taken consistently. They are also legitimate, which means they apply truth and meaning to the measurement. Finally, they are credible, which means that the outcomes are believable both subjectively and objectively.
Refer back to the example from last week’s introduction. Reliability is improved by using a depression scale that consistently evaluates the specific concept of depression in the same way across several measurement points and samples. Validity is increased by using an instrument that assesses depression rather than a related construct like bereavement, stress, or worry. Assuring that your findings are backed by similar findings in the literature as well as within the community of people who work with depression in older individuals adds to your credibility.
Use your Week 3 topic for this discussion, and think about three significant variables in the research study you planned for that issue. Consider how you would operationalize and measure each, relying on theory to guide your judgments. Additionally, consider how you would defend your measuring choice, including the scales or measurements you would employ and why. Finally, think about how a multivariate strategy to variable selection and measurement could help you evaluate your research challenge more effectively.
