Discussion Paper on Intercultural Competence
The purpose of this module is to examine cultural competence and how it influences attitudes, values, and beliefs. You will investigate how cultural competency effects how people choose to engage with others in this project.
This task is divided into two sections. You will be asked questions about bias, stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination after watching some videos.
Part One:
Give an example and a description of each of the following concepts:
1. Cultural awareness.
2. Prejudice
Stereotypes number three.
Prejudice is number four.
Discrimination is number five.
Part 2: Watch at least two of the videos below and respond to the questions.

What Would You Do If Your Waiter Was Obsessive-Compulsive?
Former classmates bully a transgender man: What Would You Do?
At a restaurant, a homeless man refused to eat.
What Would You Do If You Were In My Shoes: Sikh man is discriminated against by a sales clerk.
What would you do if a black customer was racially profiled in a high-end store?
Consider the following:
1. Find instances of each of these themes and discuss how they relate using at least two of the films above (or a different WWYD video).

2. Considering the effects of bias, stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination on relationships, how did the attitudes and behaviors depicted in the videos affect the relationships?
what are the actions of others around them? What effect did the performers’ actions have on your attitudes, emotions, and behaviors in the videos?
3. How would you handle yourself if you were to observe one of the scenarios above in order to exhibit cultural competence?
4. Cultural competency requires a high level of self-awareness of one’s own attitudes and views. Why is it necessary to be aware of these things in your dealings with others? What effect does it have on other people’s behavior?
5. Define and distinguish acceptance from tolerance. In scenarios like the ones depicted in the films, how crucial would acceptance and tolerance be? What are the benefits of exercising acceptance and tolerance in interpersonal interactions?
Give specific examples.
