Edmond Burke Parliament on The American Situation
Introduction:
It is strongly recommended that the Seven Years’ War Lecture be viewed before doing this assignment:
–After the Seven Years’ War/French & Indian War, the British government began changing the rules on the American colonists, regarding taxation and direct rule. As you saw in the lecture, the colonists did not react well to these changes.
–One member of Parliament, an Irish Lord named Edmund Burke, argued for returning the colonies to the old relationship, which involved autonomy for the colonies and light-handed British rule (in the lecture, this was called “Salutary Neglect”).
**There is no reply to any other student required in this assignment (though doing so is absolutely fine, of course!). Other student replies are only available here as a sort of “blog,” to help everyone inform their thoughts.
Assignment:
Using this document, which : burkereconspeech Trimmed-1.pdf,
Pick One of the questions #’s 1-5, and answer it based upon the document. Then after browsing the full document and previous comments in the discussion (if there are any) to get an idea of the scope of the answers to help you form an opinion, answer the last opinion question below as well. Total posts: 2
Navigating the Document: On the document in the left margin, there are numbers that show which sections correspond to the question (1, 2, 3, 4, etc).
Pick One:
How must Britain rule the colonies, and how much should the economic factor of trade between Britain and the American colonies be factored in?
What is Burke’s view of the use of Force against the American colonies?
What is the “temper and character,” according to Burke, of the American People and how does that character compare with the people of Britain?
How might the education of the American colonists hinder British efforts to abruptly change the rules that governed the colonies?
At the end of the provided part of this speech, there is a “first resolution.” What is Burke’s point in this statement, and how might it relate to colonial anger involving new laws and taxes upon the colonies after the Seven Years’ War?
And Answer This One Too:
Now that you have analyzed some of Burke’s comments, discuss this briefly with your opinion: If Burke’s speech and recommendations had been acted upon, might it have averted the War of Independence in the American colonies? Why or why not?
