Essay on Film Analysis Discussion Paper
This is the most powerful task this semester, challenging all you’ve learned thus far. This is demonstrated in university courses on interpersonal and intercultural communication.
Crash, a multi-cultural story about how lives CRASH together, was released in 2004. This film, which was made 16 years ago, is very relevant today, especially now. Your task is to watch the movie in its full, answer the questions using examples from the movie and principles discussed in class, and acknowledge that what you’ve learned is critical to effective and proper communication. In this film, you’ll learn how communication may help or hurt relationships.
If you are unfamiliar with the film, its character names, or the language, I HIGHLY recommend that you google the film, get a feel for the names BEFORE watching it, and watch it with closed captioning/subtitles. This is an R-rated film. This contains content that is not appropriate for youngsters under the age of seventeen. Please contact me via private email if you are under the age of 17.
In this film, there is a lot going on. Emotions will also play a significant role, so be sure to assess your emotional intelligence. With a critical eye, watch for ways to apply what you’ve learned in class to specific scenes.
I do not have permission to give you a copy of the film because I do not own the rights to it. You can look for a free copy on streaming services and websites or acquire one from a rental business. This film is normally shown in class, and it will be part of this week’s classwork time.

Crash Analysis Questions
1st question
Pick any three main characters. Describe how they are in their private and public selves ( this is clear for many characters)
2nd question
Give two good examples of “perceptions” that the characters have at the start of the movie.
( how they are perceived by one another) Did these perceptions hold true for the characters you provide at the end of the movie? (Take, for example, Sandra Bullock at the beginning of the film and Sandra Bullock at the conclusion. Did your first impressions of her (maybe malevolent) stand up to the end or did your impressions of her change?
3rd question
List two instances where nonverbal communication was effective in conveying a message. What was the situation like, and how did the nonverbal communicate the message?
4th question
List two examples from the film that demonstrate how coming from diverse ethnic backgrounds affects one’s ability to communicate properly and/or successfully. (This is covered in greater depth in the intercultural communication class.)
Question # 5: Pick one situation to demonstrate how family members communicate with one another.
6th question List three instances or circumstances in which poor listening skills were employed. Name the situation, the substance, the setting, and the bad habit of listening. Be as precise as possible.

8th question List five terms from the movie that could have been replaced with a more acceptable word for effective / appropriate communication. ( For example, in a car chase, the word used is stupid – a better choice; inconsiderate ) Describe the situation, the word, and the response (verbal and nonverbal).
9th question Choose one scene to demonstrate how principles from the chapter readings and lecture are used to portray communication within friendship. You must describe the characters, the content and setting of the conversation, as well as the outcomes. Is the friendship between these people stronger or weaker at the end of the movie?
