Essay on Technology and Interpersonal Communication
This assignment will help you think about what constitutes interpersonal communication, what constitutes qualitative communication between two or more individuals, and how important images are when we communicate with one another.
We discussed how humans create patterns of interaction together in the first three lessons of the semester; how technology shapes our understandings of self, other, and society (Lesson 1); the role of language in (re)producing these patterns (Lesson 2); and how these patterns may relate to co-cultural connections and insights, and perhaps even power and privilege (Lesson 3). (Lesson 3). Given our many assumptions about the quality of our interpersonal communication, our
reliance on technology and even visuals, and our effectiveness as communicators, this project will help us reframe our communication through the lens of qualitative interpersonal communication.
Instructions
Your objective is to deliver a vital message (from a number of sample scenarios below) to a friend or family member via text messaging using just emoji (but no numerical or bitmoji), gifs, and/or memes. You are not permitted to utilize typed
words, and you are not permitted to phone a friend or family member to explain this project to them before to completing it, since this would negate the objective of the task. You’ll also take screenshots and share photographs from your
conversation, which you’ll use in your post and analysis.
You should utilize one of the scenarios I’ve developed as a starting point or as a springboard. If you don’t feel comfortable with one of the scenarios or think you can come up with something more entertaining, please feel free to make your ownbut you must first get permission from me.
If you choose to design your own situation, please think beyond the box, but do not do anything that would cause harm to another person or a relationship to be harmed.
SCENARIO I: THE BREAK UP SCENARIO II: THE BREAK UP SCENARIO III: THE BREAK UP SCENARI
Inform your partner/girlfriend/boyfriend that you’ve broken up with them and explain why. Make the breakup as transparent as possible.
SCENARIO 2: MEETING A NEW PERSON

SCENARIO III: I WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL!
Inform your professor that you failed an exam in a particular class (e.g., Anatomy and Physiology, Japanese, South East Asian History). Clarify your grade and why you received a poor mark, and make sure the other person understands the
class you failed. Make an effort to be as specific as possible.
SCENARIO IV: BROKEN DOWN CAR
Let them know your automobile is broken down and that you need help. Try to clarify what you think the problem is with your automobile (no flat tires, please!) and what kind of help you require. Make an effort to be as specific as possible.
SCENARIO V: I PURCHASED A PET!
Inform the other person that you have a pet animal, what kind it is (try to be as descriptive as possible in terms of size and breed), and where you obtained it. Make an effort to be as specific as possible.
SCENARIO VI: LET’S GO FOOD SHOPPING!
Indicate if you want to go grocery shopping or out to lunch or dinner. Explain what you want to buy/eat and where you want to go in either situation. Try to persuade the other person to understand and agree on a meeting location and time.
Make an effort to be as specific as possible.
SCENARIO VII: I’VE BEEN OFFICIALLY OFFICIALLY OFFICIALLY OFFICIALLY OFF

SCENARIO VIII: I WAS THE WINNER!
Explain that you won a race/game/activity and which one you won (for example, if you won a board game, make sure the other person understands which one it was) as well as what your time was or how you won. Make an effort to be as
specific as possible.
SCENARIO NINE: I’M STRANDED
Declare that you are lost and don’t know how to travel to a specific location. Try to persuade the other person that you are lost and, if feasible, to offer you assistance in getting to a specific location. Make an effort to be as specific as possible.
Activity Requirements
Stop and tell them it’s for your class if you feel the conversation is threatening your relationship with the individual with whom you’re communicating. At the risk of endangering your friend or family member, you should not continue the action.
Tell the individual you were interacting with that this was a class activity about communicating solely using imagery as soon as the encounter is through.
You must explain which scenario you choose, how difficult/easy communication was, if you were understood or not (and how you know if you were), and how using solely visual media aided or hampered your communication with the other
person.
At least one course topic from the first three weeks of class material must be applied (i.e., a minimum of at least three course concepts, each from a different lesson in your paper).
You must define the concept properly, appropriately cite the notion, and explain the concept in your own terms.
A coherent introduction, thesis, preview, and conclusion are required.
You must link to specific photographs included in your post to reference the conversation you had.
Instead of discussing the principles in a distant manner, you must confront and apply them to your life.
Consider the following questions:
Are these concepts properly addressed? (Have I adequately explained them?)
Are these ideas adequately addressed? (Have I gone through the concepts thoroughly?)
Do these ideas appear to be linked in the way they’ve been explained?
Do my explanations and examples of each concept make sense?
Is my post well-written from start to finish? (Have I double-checked for grammatical and/or proofreading mistakes?)
Is it correct that I used APA style to cite all of the class readings and interactive lecture notes?
