The Question of Carbon Footprint
This is a two-part task:
Step 1: Go to https://www3.epa.gov/carbon-footprint-calculator/ and use the EPA’s Carbon Footprint Calculator. (This is a link to another website.) to find out what your personal carbon footprint is. Find out how much YOU, as an individual, are contributing to the global climate disaster.
What to send in: Discuss three instances in which your carbon footprint is bigger than you thought in a short (150-300 word) essay, and for each, come up with a realistic (one that you can start doing today) plan for lowering your footprint.
Step 2: Regrettably, minimizing our future carbon footprints is only one half of the puzzle. We must also remove the carbon that has already been released into the atmosphere. This can be accomplished by “carbon offsetting.” Watch the video below to learn how carbon offsetting works, why it’s important, and what the drawbacks are (nothing is perfect, but perfection should not be the enemy of the good). Then, using the website, find one project you’d be willing to help now or in the future at https://www.carbonfootprint.com/carbonoffsetprojects.html (Links to an external site.) Enter the information about your carbon footprint from step 1 at the bottom of the website. To convert your answer from step 1 (which is in pounds) to US tons, divide by 2000. Enter the value in the appropriate box and find your selected project in the list that pops up to see how much it would cost to offset enough of your carbon footprint to become carbon-neutral (no net emissions of carbon into the atmosphere). Note that when you click ‘get prices,’ the projects are divided into regional groups, and your chosen project may fall into one of them (click the titles to explore further).
FIU’s Earth and Environment Department has pledged to paying for carbon offsets through Native Energy https://nativeenergy.com/ (Links to an external site.) to offset any official department air travel-related carbon emissions.
What to submit: Add another 150-300 words after your step 1 essay to detail which project you chose, why you chose it, and how much it would cost you each year to offset enough of your carbon footprint to live a carbon-neutral lifestyle. Finally, commit to what you are personally willing and able to do to achieve that objective, beginning now. Hot tip: claiming you’re unwilling or unable to do anything is not an acceptable response.
Carbon Offsetting – Funding Climate Change Solutions (Links to an external site) is a video to watch.
