One of the major issues I see in conversations about sustainable energy is the emphasis on human activities. I like to challenge my students to think beyond the box. If you want to buy a new Tesla, go ahead and do so, but individual actions like this won’t make much of a difference if you don’t have a say in the electricity that powers it. Individual acts such as taking the bus or walking may be difficult if the surrounding infrastructure does not support them.
To tackle the climate catastrophe, we need major changes. I won’t ask you to upend the world economy because you only have a week to complete this task. Let’s just concentrate on your immediate surroundings.
Consider what your town/city government could do to reduce carbon emissions for this project. Consider the following two options: Alternative Energy and Energy Conservation. Consider a government’s primary functions: Subsidizing good goods, taxing bad things, constructing and deconstructing structures, and enforcing rules (outlawing or mandating certain things). Now combine these two elements: What can your city do to cut down on its consumption of fossil fuels?
Describe your hometown/city in your first conversation post. This could be your current residence or your childhood home. What is the population of the area? What is the layout of the neighborhoods? Is it a city, a suburb, or a farm? Is it car-oriented or walkable? Where does it get its energy? Is it simple to get around town or into a downtown area using public transportation?
Name three things your present town could do to cut its energy consumption.
