Description
Each student is required to submit one song analysis paper during the semester. There will be three different options (Song Analysis Paper 1, 2, or 3) throughout the course of the semester with different song options corresponding with different time periods. Submitted electronically via Canvas only (PDF or Word documents).
Song Analysis Paper Option 3:
Instructions:
Pick one song (1970 – 2000) from the list below and write a 2-3 page analysis (not including the table or bibliography).
You may include a brief background of the musician/band.
You are required to address:
1. Background information about the song (album, year, record label, songwriters, accolades, etc.)
2. Form. How is the song structured/organized? Does it fall under the four common types discussed in class? If not, then how would you describe the form?
3. Time signature and/or meter of the song.
4. Instrumentation (what instruments/voices are apparent in the recording?)
5. Lyrical analysis. What do the lyrics suggest in terms of the meaning or purpose of the song? Research to see if there are any sources for the artist’s intended meaning of the lyrics. You may also add your own interpretation of the lyrics. Use specific examples to support your claims and elaborate.
6. Provide a Listening Guide in a table (see below).
7. Provide a bibliography and add footnotes if necessary.
Although not required, you may discuss how the musician/band musically convey the message that they are trying to express. You may also include any significant social, cultural, or historic context that relates to the song or the time period of the song. Last, you may discuss any other relevant or interesting information about the song. Typed, with double-spaced, 12-point font.
